This was the second year for Forest For The Trees, a non-profit mural project that brings together local and international artists in the beautiful city of Portland. Last summer I requested to be considered in the next lineup, and just a few weeks after wrapping up my solo show I got my wish.
Twenty artists from Portland and around the globe gathered for one week to descend upon the city and paint some walls. We were each assigned a wall offered up by building owners and given free reign. My wall, on a new restaurant in NE Portland, was going to be Animal Battle, naturally!
Since it was my first mural, I was given one of the smaller walls. Many of the other artists had multiple stories to cover and scissor lifts or scaffolding to climb. From my perch on the ground floor, I was greeted by many neighbors and families that live in the area who were delighted to see some public art in the making.
Working much larger was a bit daunting. I wasn’t sure if my painting techniques would transfer well with latex paint and a stubbly vertical surface, but as it turns out, that wall was much like a giant piece of watercolor paper.
And five days later, I won this battle.
My wall was just one of MANY fantastic murals that went up all over the city. Here are just a few I’ve visited so far:
…and many, many more, including:
// Mary Iverson, Paige Wright, The Lost Cause, Zach Yarrington, Faith47, Curiot, Gage Hamilton, Blakely Dadson, J. Shea, Ogi \\

And a great recap + images of all the murals in progress over at Empty Kingdom.
I’d like to give a giant thank you to Gage Hamilton and Matt Wagner/Hellion Gallery for organizing the event and to all the volunteers who kept us fed, watered, sheltered, and taken care of. Special thanks to the fellas at BTU Brasserie for letting me paint some animals on their wall. You guys rule.
Painting the mural was fun, but connecting with fellow artists in this community was even better. Proud to be part of a project that positively contributes to my city through art.
